This past Christmas, we decided to take a short cruise—our first—as a different way of celebrating the holiday, and to escape to warmer climes for a change. The first stop on the cruise was Key West Florida. Now we had only been on-board for a day, but I was already hankering for hot sauce… They had some on the ship, but—because of the rules they have to prevent outbreaks of contagions—they wouldn’t allow me to bring it to the table.
So while we were ashore in Key West, I asked around for a place to buy a bottle of my own (wouldn’t you?). We were directed to Peppers of Key West, a Hot Sauce Specialty Shop that really sets the standard for customer service. The owners were super friendly and funny, the shop looks great, and their selection of sauces, condiments, books, and paraphernalia was extensive.
But the highlight of the shop was their tasting bar. When you find a few sauces that peak your interest, just pull up a stool at the bar and the proprietors will supply you with a small basket of chips, and dipping cups with your selections for you to try out.
Of course, they are also very happy to make suggestions for you based on your tastes, and they’re quite happy to share their wealth of knowledge about a subject that they clearly love (as well as share bawdy stories and a sense of the local scene).
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Key West (oh yeah… it was pretty there), and you like food, we highly recommend Peppers of Key West. You won’t leave empty handed.
Molten Golden South Carolina Hot Sauce
While we were there, they turned us on to Molten Golden, one of our favorite hot sauces now. It packs a lot of heat, but not so much as to overpower the wonderful flavors of the Caribbean. If you like hot sauce, you gotta try this one!
